UX / UI : Cashier’s in Netherlands have a heart of gold.

“ I don’t say any of this to be rude, but once you all know the error of your ways, ‘ cashiers ’ can enjoy their jobs a bit more. Remember… it only takes one thorn to make you bleed, and it only takes one prick to ruin your day “ - Inge, 51.

It’s the little things that can sometimes be the most annoying. During her time as a cashier for ‘Gigant’ Inge decided to make a list outlining customer etiquette towards people that are handling your purchases and money, which goes beyond the pleasant smiles and greetings. While this research was only a small part of my thesis as well as the live product development, I studied these insights and realised that accessing culture is always a sudden, destructive and an unpredictable action, Hence the steps towards problem solving required time and patience. It was important to understand the role of the cahier through their spectrum of Interventions in a modern, multifaceted and ever changing landscape, specifically related to movie theatres. After compiling all our learnings the solution was to build a platform primarily for a tablet. Because we may not realise it but the role of a cashier is more than sitting behind the desk and exchanging money for a ticket

Our Component-based architecture as above, with minimum elements focused on the decomposition of the design into individual functional or logical components that represent well-defined communication interfaces containing methods , events, and properties to . Since this solution was for a third party SAS provider, a component based architecture not only allows to add and subtract features depending on the clients need but also make the design responsive depending on the clients affordability of the hardware .

“ On the other hand don’t assume Cashiers know the prices for everything just because the price comes up when they scan for the item. No cashier actually looks at the screen until the end of the order or if the register makes a funny noise. I am not a human computer I can not remember the price of even the clothes on sale much less everything else. ” - De Vries, 45.

While building the product we also realised that this design needs to be intuitive and data needs be understood and then segregated depending on which form of information becomes primary , which ones become secondary and how to keep the tertiary information handy at all times depending on which stage of the order you are.

The basic definition of intuition is the ability to acquire knowledge without conscious reasoning . But to build an intuitive interface one does need material that can be substantiated, and that can only be done through conscious reasoning. Hence the stages of reliance on intuition must exist before the actual material collection, so that afterwards one might compare instinct with proof.

But a quick and ready insight or “the power or faculty of attaining to direct knowledge or cognition without evident rational thought and inference” Is a more attractive position for any client as opposed to the unglamorous tedium of research.

Secondary components are event specific screens. These are minimizable components such that a user can toggle between multiple screens.

Tertiary component is the cashiers personal notification panel which keeps the personal notification and back office details dedicated yet continuous in experience to the main system.

To my last minute movie peeps ! Damn you all! If the box office closes at seven you better be in line at ten to seven. I don’t want to still be in there at ten after, I will not be friendly, I am no longer getting paid, so if you want ‘friendly’ service you better be out of their by closing! Also, make up your mind, we have internet , posters, banners and even google that clearly gives you the time of the film.- Eve.

Going Dutch, The problem with going for an event ( as it is with most activities involving human interaction ) is it all depends on mood. Moods are unpredictable, they fluctuate depending on environment, atmosphere, company and state of mind. As moods change so does the experience, which meant that the once size fits all design didn’t just have to be intuitive but also fast to prevent annoyances like long wait times or a stagnant queue.

We realised that there is always a queue when there are a bunch of people going for a movie but paying with different payment methods and we took it upon ourselves at ‘Ticketing’ to solve that problem through multiple payment Api’s in a flow design format, making it easy for everyone to use.

Not all problems can be solved, some are…. smellier than others.Without going into too much detail, for the sake of being polite (we are after all classy like that) I leave you with this, would you like a breath mint with your bill? - An anonymous cashier
